Korean Dramas, 2016

a collection of the dramas that I have watched
Descendants of the Son 태양의 후예
Song Joong-ki as Captain Yoo Si-jin (aka Big Boss)
Song Hye-kyo as Doctor Kang Mo-yeon (aka Beauty)
Jin Goo as Sergeant Major Seo Dae-young (aka Wolf)
Kim Ji-won as First Lieutenant Yoon Myeong-ju

Yoo Si-jin is the captain of a South Korean Special Forces unit. He catches a motorcycle thief, Kim Gi Beom, with Sergeant Major Seo Dae-young. The thief is injured during his capture and is sent to the hospital. Dae-young realizes his cellphone was stolen by the thief and goes to the hospital along with Si-jin to retrieve his cellphone. In the emergency room, Si-jin meets Dr. Kang Mo-yeon for the first time. He falls in love with her immediately. Mo-yeon mistakenly assumes Si-jin is part of the thief's criminal gang, due to his nickname "Big Boss", which is actually his call sign. He proves to her that he is a soldier with the help of army surgeon Yoon Myeong-ju.
Si-jin and Mo-yeon begin to date, but due to their jobs, their dates don't go well. Si-jin receives orders to lead his soldiers on a peacekeeping mission in the fictional country of Uruk. Meanwhile, Mo-yeon is upset because she failed to become a professor because of a colleague's privileged background. When Si-jin and Mo-yeon meet again, they talk about their views on life and realize how different they are. Si-jin, as a soldier, kills to protect lives and Mo-yeon, as a doctor honoring the Hippocratic oath, tries to save lives. They say their goodbyes. Dae-young on the other hand faces a dilemma on whether to continue with his relationship with Myeong-ju or risk being removed from the army by Myeong-ju's father, Lieutenant General Yoon Gil-joon.
Eight months later, Mo-yeon rebuffs the sexual advances of hospital director Han Suk-won and as a result is assigned to lead a medical team to Uruk. There, Si-jin and Mo-yeon meet and fall in love again. Through their encounters in Uruk—an earthquake and an epidemic—their love for each other grows stronger.

My Thoughts
Hailed as the drama of the year, this needs no further introduction. A good pre-production drama with 2 strong love-lines, which could be the next phase of K-drama. As much as I like the drama, there were times I laughed at the non-logical aspect especially towards the end.
Come Back Mister 돌아와요 아저씨
Rain as Lee Hae-joon/Kim Young-soo
Oh Yeon-seo as Han Hong-nan/Han Gi-tak
Kim In-kwon as Kim Young-soo
Kim Soo-ro as Han Gi-tak
Lee Min-jung as Shin Da-hye/Han Hong-nan

A man is worked to death, but he comes back to the living world in the attractive body of another man for a limited amount of time. Lee Hae-Joon is a perfect man with good looking appearance. He works as a section chief in the women’s apparel section at a department store. His body is actually possessed by the spirit of Kim Young-Soo who was worked to death. Hong Nan is a beautiful woman, but her spirit is possessed by tough guy. Shin Da-Hye is a beautiful housewife, but her husband suddenly dies. She falls into a love triangle with Lee Hae-Joon and a promising store employee.

My Thoughts
Rain was really comical in the first few episodes, which was a refreshing change from his previous drama My Lovely Girl. I actually enjoyed the series, but things got draggy after the mains supposedly solved the mystery surrounding their deaths. It would have been perfect if the pace was quickened towards the end.
Cheese in the Trap 치즈인더트랩
Kim Go-eun as Hong Seol
Park Hae Jin as Yoo Jung
Seo Kang Joon as Baek In Ho
Lee Sung Kyung as Baek In Ha

Drama depicts the delicate relationship between female university student Hong Seol and her senior Yoo Jung. Hong-Seol works part-time due to her family's poor background. Yoo Jung is good looking, gets good grades, athletic and has a kind personality, but he has a dark side.

My Thoughts
I love this webtoon turned drama series, despite the controversy that the drama deviating from its original webtoon story line. Just for sharing - it was noticeably when the drama shortened Park Hae Jin's screen time around ep 13-14 while increasing the screen time of Seo Kang Joon. I liked both male leads, so it really doesn't matter to me! Thumbs up for the drama, must watch!
Entertainer 딴따라
Ji Sung as Shin Suk-ho
Lee Hyeri as Jung Geu-rin
Kang Min-hyuk as Jo Ha-neul
Chae Jung-an as Yeo Min-joo

Shin Suk-ho is a successful manager who works for KTOP entertainment, one of the largest entertainment companies in South Korea. After deciding to become independent and trying to develop his own company, Mango Entertainment, he suddenly faces many hardships and loses everything he has and goes to prison. After release, while he is trying to find a way back to life, he finds a talented high school student, Jo Ha-neul and decides to turn him into a famous singer. But he realizes that Ha-neul is an ex-convict and was accused for sexual abuse by his friend, Lee Ji-Young. Shin Seok-ho starts a new journey with Ha-neul, forms the group 'Entertainer Band' (Ddandara band/ 딴다라 벤드), and tries to put things in their right place with the help of band members, his loyal friends and Jung Geu-rin, Ha-neul's hard-working sister.

My Thoughts
This is the first drama that I watched while it was still airing week after week in Korea. There wasn't much cliffhangers, which made it okay to pause but the soundtrack was really good. Seo Kang Joon was a guest star, which was a pleasant surprise!
Signal 시그널
Lee Je-hoon as Park Hae-young
Kim Hye-soo as Cha Soo-hyun
Cho Jin-woong as Lee Jae-han

A mysterious walkie talkie allows a detective in 1989 to communicate with a cold case profiler from 2015; with the power of fore and hindsight the two not only solve crimes but prevent them from ever taking place. However a long standing murder case is closer to home than either realizes.

My Thoughts
Awesome show that kept you tight on your toes! I had the familiar feeling while watching Phantom, so I googled and noticed that both shows were written by the same writer. I'm now officially a fan.
