新年快乐 2014

WoodenHorse
We ushered in the year of the (wooden) Horse a couple of weeks back and it was also my first CNY without baby bro. Besides lil bro who had to observe customs/traditions since he was lower in rank, the rest of us were allowed to continue with CNY celebrations. On CNY eve, we made a trip to Mandai to visit baby bro. We got new flowers and hung up the mini barney that Auntie Emily got for him. Thereafter, I headed home to both sides of the parents' place for reunion dinner.

CNY day 1 was spent rushing between 3 places - parents-in-law, grandma and great grandma. I didn't take any pics on the 1st day due to the hectic rush. I even forgot to give great-granny her angpao till I reached home and discovered the angpao in my bag :( Immediately called my mum and ask her to give on my behalf while I TT the amt to her, lol!  Nevertheless, we spent CNY day 2 at my maternal grandparents' place, gambling & catching up with my cousins.

CNY Day 3 was spent on visiting too, In the morning, we headed over to Bernard's place to visit Baby Aden + mahjong.

Last year, I had the privilege of carrying Baby Raenee, Ryan's precious girl. This year, Baby Aden came along much to the delight of their parents Bernard & Steff :) He's such a charmer!

First time playing mahjong without any chips. We had to record our loss/winnings on paper, lol!

Then it was off to Keith's 小舅 place for another round of gathering. 舅 & would whip up lots of dishes for everyone.

The cousins unite; Leecher looked really out of place amongst all his younger cousins (^^)

Before I end off this post, this is my collection of angpao for this year! Thanks to all those relatives who still gave us angpao even though we are married :)

49 days

Today marks the 49th day since baby bro left the family.

According to the Chinese custom, it will be his last day on Earth. After 11pm tonight, he will head for a new chapter of life.

As the priest performed his chanting, I told baby bro that he'll have to be on his way for a new lease of life after finishing the final meal that mummy dearest prepared for him. It was through fate that we became siblings in this lifetime & I'm very grateful for it. No matter where he is, he will always remain as my baby bro. The one that we all dote on.

Time has come for us to bid farewell (once again). I do sincerely hope/pray that he'll be a healthy child in his next life.

Perhaps, fate will let us continue our kinship in another lifetime....

KL Work Trip, Sep 2012: Arrival at JW Marriott Hotel & Dinner at Ding Tai Fung 鼎泰丰

Another week zoomed past without me knowing it ~ Work has been keeping me busy, but I'll make myself switch to off-work-mode once I stepped out from the office building. Can't believe that we are now in Feb! Since Feb is such a short month, I'm sure before I know it, March would have arrived :p The start of this year also means that there are some changes in my role - perhaps it could be a blessing in disguise :) Nevertheless, I'll still be clearing all the backlogs that I have accumulated thus far. KL is fast becoming my 2nd home, with countless trips made within the past 2 years. However, this trip is the only time where I stayed for 3D2N in KL for clients' projects.

Air traffic control tower. I learn a lot about aviation from Rinta, who joined the industry a couple of months back. Lucky her get to tour the various airports all over the world!
P9182603
This is fast becoming the mandatory airport pic on the blog every time I travel :)
P9182609P9182614
It was rather cold in the airport (which explains the jacket) and I had to get a cup of hot tea to warm the body up. I was feeling tired, so I sat at my favourite seat and watched the planes instead. The warm sun rays that shone through the glass panels provided me with the warmth I need.

Since the toilet was empty ~ heehee!

Time to board the plane & I took a quick nap before landing in KL 50 mins later. I was traveling with my boss on this trip, but he only stayed on for 2 days while I extended another day to visit other clients. We checked into JW Marriott Hotel this time round.

Staying in Singapore, I'm so used to pressing l for ground floor. Many a times, I'll walk into the lift and press 1, only to realize that I made a mistake when the lift door opened on level 1, lol! If there were people in the lift, I'll walk out and pretended that I have reached the "right" floor, haha!

Nice to see a touch of green :)

Once again, I ended up with double single beds ~ is it so difficult to get a room with king sized bed?? It mostly happened to me in KL and across various hotels.

Energy bar that I'll keep in my bag to give me the extra boost whenever I'm feeling hungry or couldn't afford the luxury for a sit-down meal.

In all my KL trips, I'll try to stay at a hotel that is walking distance to any shopping malls, to have access to food eateries. The plus point at staying at Marriott is that Pavilion is just across the street.

We ended up having dinner at Ding Tai Fung at Boss's request, lol! I have the impression that the angmohs (at least those in my team) tend to associate Ding Tai Fung with good Chinese food.

Whenever Crispy is in town, we'll bring him to Ding Tai Fung to satisfy his xiaolongbaos craving. A close contender is the colourful xiaolongbaos made famous by Paradise Dynasty. I'm craving for this as I'm typing this entry, lol!

The rest of the dishes that we ordered, which I personally find it saltier as compared to SG's version.

La Cuisson

P1228117 copy
La Cuisson started its humble beginnings from a coffee shop in Queen Street. While I didn't had to chance to visit the first shop, I was privileged to be invited to a media tasting session at their new location. Nestled along the row of shophouses along Prinsep Street (which housed Strictly Pancakes, Mind Cafe etc), La Cuisson bistro & wine bar became the latest kid on the block.
P1228192
With BFF and our +1s for this invited session :) It was always a pleasure to catch up over meals ... well, that's what we all do nowadays!
P1228186P1228187
The bistro is run by Chef Kenneth Lim, who was formerly trained at DB Bistro at Marina Bay Sands. The 2-storey shop-house offers a seating capacity of approx 40 pax. On the 1st floor, you can opt for indoor (air-conditioned seating) for 12 or alfresco dining. The 2nd floor offers a private space perfect for couples and/or corporate events.
P1228110P1228112
The interior was simple and rustic, nothing over the top. The cozy and homely atmosphere made me feel at ease, just like I was heading to a friend's place for dinner.
P1228134
We started with a glass of bubbly wine - a perfect start to any meal, lol!
P1228125
Langue De Boeuf (Ox Tongue Salad, $16), served with sous-vide ox tongue, Kipfler potatoes, mustard tarragon dressing, mesclun salad and shaved onions. Sous-vide (French for "under vaccum) is a technique for cooking food sealed in airtight plastic bags in a water bath at an accurately regulated temperature over long hours. Chef Kenneth uses this method to cook most of his meat. The ox tongue was juicy and definitely the highlight of the dish.
 P1228132P1228136
Charcuterie Platter, served with chorizo, saucisson and a selection of homemade terrines ($22). I love the foie gras terrine, which came mixed with dried fruits such as figs and apricots. When paired with the warm toasted bread ... yums! Chorizo and saucisson were slightly on the saltier side though, much to Leecher's delight.
P1228138
Homemade Duck Rillette ($8) - this appeared on the table and within seconds it was gone, lol! I guessed this must be a hot favourite with everyone. Served with a fruity orange reduction, coupled with shavings of orange peel, this dish was pleasing to our taste buds.
P1228143P1228144
Pork Pot Au Feu, served with sous-vide pork shoulder, pork sausage, puy lentils, mixed vegetables in an aromatic pork jus ($29)
P1228151P1228155
Lamb Duo (for 2 pax) served with braised lamb shank, pan-seared lamb rump, Kipfler potato gratin and garden salad ($68).
P1228161
Shoulder Tender (200 grams), served with 200day grain fed Australian Angus, mashed potatoes, confit shallots, roasted parsnip and garlic ($28). My personal pick for main course would be Lamb Duo! The meat was so tender that it was falling off from the bone. Instead of using stock, the sauce is made from red wine which added to the oomph factor. Long-time readers of this blog will know that I'm not a fan of potatoes (apart from french fries), but hey, I was stealing Kipfler potatoes off the next table, lol - goes to show how delicious they are! By the way, only limited portions of Lamb Duo is available each week, so grab it while it lasts :)
P1228170P1228178
Lastly, we had 2 items off the Dessert Menu for tasting: Poached Pear, served with vanilla ice cream and beetroot puree ($10). Dark Chocolate Ganache, served with valrhona chocolate, white chocolate sesame crips, chilli pistachio brittle, pomelo pieces and green tea mousse ($13). Poached pear was a refreshing taste, something that I would not order on my own given my extreme bias towards anything chocolatey. However, this was a delight to eat! Fruity and juicy, it was the best way to balance the diet. Dark Chocolate Ganache would be my ideal choice of finishing the meal on a sweet note :) There are also other items to choose from - the classic creme brulee ($8), strawberry mille-feuille ($15) or cheese platter ($24).

Chef Kenneth also teamed up with a wine distributor and handpicked the wines for La Cuisson. The price ranges between $50-$80 per bottle, with selections from both New & Old World. Do check out the wine list if you happen to drop by :)

*Special thanks to Jean & Jenny for the invite :)
